Hi!

My name is Freya, and I’m a Australian writer based in Sweden. I am obsessed with places: the way that stories, people and culture come together to make unique local environments.

Placemaking (how places become recognised) was my topic of my masters in Social Anthropology, but even after graduating I still have so many questions: What makes a place real? What does globalisation mean for local traditions? How can we travel in an authentic, culturally sustainable way?

This site is a place to consider some of those questions. Through travel, through literature and culture, The Clementine Journals are a place to explore some of those questions; drawing on anthropological methods to notice the small details, local rhythms and personal stories which shape place in a way you don’t always get to see in traditional travel guides. Here you’ll find my fieldnotes; a mix of essays, cultural observations, and guides, all rooted in a more thoughtful, personal approach to travel.

I’m currently building The Clementine Journal as part a personal project, part community, part portfolio for future editorial work. If you’re also interested in writing that explores identity, place, and everyday life across cultures, feel free to get in touch. I’m open to collaboration and commissions at theclementinejournals@gmail.com
